Art in Context: Revolutionary Encounters; European Art of the French Revolution and Beyond (4 of 6-part series)

German Romanticism: When Napoleon invades Germany, he is initially welcomed as a bringer of Enlightenment. However, when it becomes clear that he has other intentions, Germany will look to its own historical past, unique landscape, and folkloric traditions to create an alternative visual tradition from the pre-dominance of French influence. Artists like Caspar David Friedrich will create awe inspiring views of the German experience of the world.Presented by Annalee Andres, art historian.
