Lecture and concert by scholar Maja Trochimczyk, Ph.D., music historian, and Wojciech Kocyan, piano professor at Loyola Marymount University about Maria Szymanowska, 19th century Polish pianist-composer (1789-1831), the Court Pianist of the Tsarinas. Her musical salon in St. Petersburg gathered aristocracy, poets and artists and her romantic piano music inspired Chopin. Madame Calment was born in Arles, France in 1975, and died in 1997 at 122 years of age. She conducted a clever real estate transaction and outlived her buyer and she smoked, biked, swam and at ate her daily sweets. PERFORMANCE: THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE RUSSIAN GUITARSunday, August 25, 1:30 PM1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Norma Kershaw Auditorium Fee: $7 Member/ $10 General Guitarist and lutenist John Schneiderman, lecturer, UCI Department of Music, presents a special recital of 19th-century Russian guitar music. Unlike elsewhere in Europe, the 19th-century guitar tradition in Russia was associated with a seven-string instrument tuned to a G chord. Mr. Schneiderman will be performing works by Sychra, Morkov, Glinka, Aleksandrov, Lvov, and others on a rare guitar by Mikhail Yeroshkin.
