Kidseum Cultural Art Trunks
Kidseum Cultural Art Trunks are designed to create a mini-gallery in your classroom. The trunks include materials related to their theme such as hands-on art objects, lesson plans, videos, and books. Individual trunk themes include: Mexican American, Chinese, Ancient Egyptian, African and others. Kidseum Cultural Art Trunks are available for a fee of $40 per week. Kidseum School and Community Presentations
Kidseum art instructors provide customized cultural presentations and art classes for your school, classroom or service organization. Fees range from $8-$10 per person, depending on the project. For more information and booking please call 714.567.3670 or email gsouth@bowers.org.
SCHOOL OUTREACH
The Bowers Museum Docent Guild gives free one-hour classroom presentations that enhance the students' curriculum and understanding with hands-on activities, museum artifacts and photographs. Each Outreach program is designed, formatted and presented in a manner that captures one of the exciting exhibits at the Museum.

| 3-4 | Orange County Then and Now Explore the colorful and diverse history of the people who settled the west coast and Orange County. Learn about the Indians, the Mission and Rancho Periods, the Gold Rush and the Railroad Era to modern times. |
| 3-5 | Coastal Habitat (Tide Pools of Orange County) Explore the animals and plants found in Orange County tide pools. Learn how the Southern California Indians used these coastal riches as a source of food, tools and decoration. |
| 4 | Off to the Gold Rush! Learn about the people who came to work in the gold mines during the California Gold Rush from 1849 through the 1850s. Slides, artifacts and hands-on articles help students to get a real feel for the period. |
| 5 | Spirit of the Southwest This presentation covers the Indians of the Four Corners area of the American Southwest and is tied to environmental factors. It illustrates the continuing thread of artistic styles and functions of baskets, pottery, jewelry and more, from traditional days through decades of culture contact with the "white man." |
| All Grades | Masks Around the World Discover how masks are used for disguise, protection, adornment, entertainment and ceremonies in cultures around the world. Learn through slides, artifacts and collection of many masks. |

THE QUALITIES OF QUALITY: UNDERSTANDING EXCELLENCE IN ARTS EDUCATION
Presenter: Steve Seidel, Director of the Arts in Education Program, Harvard University Graduate School of Education
Join fellow educators for a timely conversation about arts education with a presentation by Steve Seidel on Project Zero's recent report, The Qualities of Quality: Understanding Excellence in Arts Education. The evening includes a facilitated discussion on practical ways educators and parents can implement some of the study's findings in arts education efforts in Orange County. Reception follows. Co-sponsored by the Orange County Department of Education.
Professor Seidel has served as former director of Project Zero, where he is currently senior researcher. His research interests include reflective practices in schools, close examination of student work, and assessment and documentation of learning. Before coming to Harvard, he taught high school theater and language arts in the Boston area for 17 years.

SILK ROAD EDUCATOR WORKSHOP

Presented by the Bowers Museum in partnership with the University of California, Irvine History Project
Step inside the world of Ancient China and the Silk Road and bring learning to life! Learn how to incorporate museum artifacts in your teaching to engage your students and enhance academic achievement and critical thinking skills.
Workshop Presenter: Nicole Gilbertson, Ph.D., Site Director, UCI History Project
- Explore the permanent exhibition, Ancient Arts of China: A 5000 Year Legacy to study the rich and diverse works of art on display with a docent-led tour.
- Examine an artifact from the Silk Road and study its historical context and significance.
- Develop a lesson plan or outline to use in your classroom tomorrow.
- Receive instructional materials aligned to the Visual Arts, History-Social Science, and English/Language Arts content standards.
- Refreshments provided.
- Fee: $10, payable on site (covers materials)

TOURS
Bowers Museum offers a wide variety of tour options for K-12 students visiting the museum.
School Tours, Cultural Art Classes and Activity Classes
Led by trained Docents, Bowers Museum offers one-hour tours and two-and-a-half hour Morning at the Museum with emphasis on grades 3-12.
Cultural Art classes are designed for grades 3 and above. The wide variety of classes provides students an opportunity to create a keepsake art piece related to their museum field trip; all art classes relate to current exhibits.
One hour Activity Tours for grades K-3 are provided Tuesday through Friday trained facilitators. Designed to engage students through a hands-on approach, the activities include stories, games, songs, musical instruments and costumes connected to the exhibits at the museum. Art classes and Activity Tours take place at the Kidseum.
All tours align with all of the state of California Content Standards and Frameworks.
