FEBRUARY 8 | Early Renaissance: Venice and the Makings of a Cosmopolitan City

Venetian artists created unique interpretations of the prevailing Renaissance style during the fifteenth century. This set the stage for the Florence (design) versus Venice (color) competition, which resulted from the cities’ differing painting methods. The Bellini family workshop (Jacopo, Giovanni, and Gentle) would bring the city great renown as the first Venetian Renaissance painters, while the “eyewitness” style of painter Vittore Carpaccio provided idealistic glimpses into Venetian daily life.
