About Maxwell Barr

Maxwell was trained in an elite Couture Academy in Sydney, Australia incorporating a background of Lithography and Graphic Design into the field of fashion. His first position as a pattern maker in the U.S. was with French Courturier Jean Louis of "Gilda" & "Picnic" fame who had retired from the movie industry.

Blending his couture knowledge with his costume construction, Maxwell has worked 36 years for the film and television industry. He taught costume history and construction at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Woodbury University, and Los Angeles City College. He is a retired Director of the Costume Shop at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

On a grant from UCLA, he studied 17th, 18th and 19th century fashion in various museums in London and Paris. Maxwell has studied Embroidery Methodology from the Renaissance to current day at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace in London. Maxwell's passion is studying and recreating fashion from the 17th to the 19th centuries. He just completed a series of 42 lectures on 18th century costume at the Getty Center.

Maxwell's other passion is embroidery from France to China and Japan. In preparing for this lecture, he realized that this is his 50th year involved in fashion and he is still learning!
