The June book selection, The Moor’s Account, is a historical novel first published in 2014. Based on the true story of the ill-fated 16th century Spanish expedition, this novel is an imagined memoir of the first black explorer of America. It won the American Book Award, Arab-American Book Award, Hurston-Wright Legacy Award, was long listed for the Booker Prize, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Moroccan-born author Laila Lalami has written five books and currently is a professor of Creative Writing at UC Riverside.
