Books at Bowers: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

This session is full. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause. Space still available for Zoom session on October 22.

The October book selection is the 1959 gothic horror novel, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, which is considered by many to be the greatest haunted house story ever written. After the book discussion an optional multi-gallery docent led tour, Unsolved Mysteries, will focus on the spooky stories and sightings in the historical wing of Bowers Museum.

Jackson’s book follows the summer experience of an occult scholar and his three guests who look for evidence of a haunting in the mysterious house. Closing doors, chilly drafts, unsettlingly odd noises, and writing appearing on walls are some of the unexplained events in the house. Stephen King has described this National Book Award finalist as “one of the finest horror novels of the 20th century.” In 2018 a New York Times poll listed The Haunting of Hill House as “the scariest book of fiction” by participants and a must read for all the fans of horror and mystery genres. Join us for a dive into the supernatural and paranormal.
