Talks
SATURDAY | OCTOBER 26
1:30 – 2:30 PM | NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | OPENING DAY LECTURE
Presented by Matthew Sangster, Professor of Romantic Studies, Fantasy and Cultural History and Co-Director of the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic at the University of Glasgow.
For centuries readers have escaped their everyday lives and journeyed into new worlds filled with magic and adventure, incredible mythical creatures, and heroes and villains that speak to our greatest dreams and fears. This lecture will explore the roots of modern Fantasy in some of the world’s oldest forms of storytelling, and will demonstrate how the genre draws on the past while constantly reinventing itself. As in the exhibition it accompanies, insights will be offered into the creative processes of renowned Fantasy authors through the showcasing of original manuscripts, maps and illustrations. The lecture will also examine the role of Fantasy in addressing complex themes like power, identity, and morality, and how these narratives provide a lens for understanding our own world. The intricate art of Fantasy worldbuilding will be considered, highlighting how authors and creators craft immersive and captivating universes. Join us for a celebration of the boundless creativity and enduring appeal of Fantasy storytelling.
