Art in Context (6-part Lecture Series): Topics in Contemporary Art - Understanding Art Today

Presented by Thomas Folland, PhD
Part 1, January 12: Introduction to Contemporary Art
Part 2, January 19: The Disappearing Object: Sculpture, Assemblage, Collage, and Installation

Beginning in the post-World War II years, artists began redefining sculpture by incorporating some of the most unlikely materials; things like cardboard, sheet metal, wood or even old clothing became incorporated into a practice that was once defined by either carving or casting. As a result, the meaning of sculpture evolved in such a way that new terms had to be invented; assemblage or installation for example. This lecture will trace the evolution of sculpture in contemporary art through a selection of artists to include Gordon Matta-Clark, Eleanor Anton, David Hammons, Robert Gober, Cady Noland, Thomas Hirschhorn and Yinka Shonibare.
