East Meets West: An Expression of Culture


There will be over 50 calligraphic works from the members of the Southern California Society for Calligraphy, (SfC). Member pieces range from student to professional level. The East meets West theme compliments Bowers’ current exhibit on Empress Dowager, focusing on western influence during her reign. There will be demonstrations, workshops and a reception on the dates below. The SfC members will be at the display most of the time to write visitor names on complimentary souvenir bookmarks!
Jan 31 & Feb 3: Kristi Darwick and Stephanie Chao will show techniques, talk about the
differences and similarities, and cover the history and process of Eastern and Western
Feb 1: Barbara Close will lead a hands-on workshop on western brush calligraphy, 12 PM - 3 PM.
Feb 3: Coffee-and-tea reception: Meet the participating calligraphers, watch your name being written on a bookmark, and view demos of Chinese and western brush lettering., 2 PM - 4 PM.
