CANCELLED - From Seeing the Unseen to Performing the Extraordinary: Exhibiting African Arts through African Perspectives

This program has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

Presented by Dr. Polly Nooter Roberts, Professor, UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance and Consulting Curator for African Arts, LACMA

This talk will explore the translation of African art into western museum contexts with reference to two LACMA exhibitions that Dr. Roberts has worked on: 2017’s The Inner Eye: Vision and Transcendence in African Arts and 2020’s Performing the Extraordinary: Monumental Masquerades of Africa. Inspired by African concepts and perspectives, an exhibition's impact may more closely resonate with the active, instrumental, and purposeful roles these works played in peoples' lives, than the typically static context of a museum.
