Books at Bowers: The Library Book by Susan Orlean

For Bowers members only: A Book Club experience

“Books at Bowers: Touring Through the Pages” is a Bowers Docent Guild sponsored book club that pairs a topical book with the museum’s featured exhibits. Join a docent-led book discussion for members. An optional docent led tour will follow the book discussion. All book selections are available for purchase in the museum’s gallery store.

The next book selection is The Library Book by Susan Orlean which will feature a literary social hour rather than an exhibit tour. The December event is entitled “Cookies and Conversation.” The book club theme for this event is a celebration of reading. Following the book discussion in the Fluor Gallery, a social hour with refreshments is planned. You may bring a new children’s book to donate to the Bowers Kidseum if you wish.

Please join us for a holiday gathering of conversation and community dedicated to reading and literacy.

The Los Angeles Central Library fire provides the starting point for Orlean’s book but it becomes a thrilling journey through the stacks that reveals how these beloved institutions provide much more than just books - and why they remain an essential part of the heart, mind and soul of our country. It is also a master journalist’s reminder that, perhaps especially in the digital era, they are more necessary than ever. “Book lovers …will cheer for the celebration of libraries everywhere. It’s a sheer delight” (USA Today).
