Presented by Jean Stern, Director Emeritus of The Irvine Museum and specialist in the California Impressionist period. This series is generously sponsored by the Bowers California Arts Council, an affiliate council of the Bowers Museum.
Each lecture consists of approximately 90-100 slides and lasts about 1 hour.
September 10: Introduction to Impressionism (French, international, and American)
September 17: Introduction to California Impressionism
Impressionism is perhaps the best loved and most popular art style in the world. Mr. Stern will discuss the origins of Impressionism as an art style. He will show examples of Traditional and Academic Art followed by an examination of Impressionism and how the two art styles clashed. Impressionism will be explained by looking at the work of several French Impressionists and how these artists benefitted by the scientific studies on colors. He will end the lecture by recounting how Impressionism became an international phenomenon.
