Unlocking the Magic of Ancient Chinese Cinnabar with Dr. Hui Fang

Presented by Hui Fang, Yangtze Professor of Archaeology, serving as dean of the Institute of Cultural Heritage, Shandong University and honorary curator of Shandong University Museum.

Cinnabar, a mercury ore of red color, is often used as a pigment in ancient China. Symbolizing otherworldly transformation, this pigment plays an important role in the rituals of Early China, especially in funeral ceremonies. This lecture examines the archaeological findings of cinnabar remains, presenting a rich tapestry of their cultural and symbolic meanings.
